Outlook for Marketing Improves dramatically

The outlook for the UK advertising market in 2010 has improved markedly, according to the latest AA/Warc Expenditure Report with ad revenues predicted to rise throughout 2010, equating to an annual increase of 2.3% at current prices.

Police send the Register journalist CRB check database

Police face accusations of incompetence after accidentally emailing a file detailing the results of thousands of criminal records checks to a Register journalist. The author of the email at Gwent Police is now facing a gross misconduct investigation and potential sacking over the incident, which came to light this week.

Orange exposes customer email addresses

Yet again a company has made the mistake of using a standard email client and exposed the email addresses of thousands of customers by putting them in the Cc:, rather than the Bcc: field. This time it was Orange who compromised the privacy of 1,107 of its customers when a marketing email from its customer relations division revealed the e-mail addresses of, according to one blogger, over 2000 individual email addreses.

I got two emails this week – the first from SalesForce.com to advise me that SF.com would be unavailable from 06.00P.M. (sic) to 11.00P.M. on Saturday 13th February. The second related to the £709M lawsuit BSkyB had just won a substantial part of against EDS (now part of HP).

 

Data Privacy update - Israel & Andorra now "adequate" ; Encrypted USB sticks "flawed"

Israel and Andorra are now deemed "adequate" by the EU as far as Data Privacy is concerned - meaning that you can soon transfer data to both countries without any special requirements.
Israel and the Principality of Andorra have received assessments of 'adequacy of data protection' from the Article 29 Working Party.

The admission yesterday by T-Mobile that they had suffered a dataloss measured in the hundreds of thousands came hard on the heels of the admission that the head of an Indian IT outsourcing company had sold medical records from a UK private hospital for £4 each. In both cases the data was sold to companies who then used it to market to these people.
