ICO takes no action against Google

The UK Information Commissioner has just announced the conclusion of their findings in relation to Google's acquiring data from the wi-fi networks of homes and businesses. They have taken the view that there was no significant privacy issue. Here is the full text of their finding:

Safe Harbor "no longer enough"

June 1st, 2010

The German Data Privacy authorities have picked up on the limitations of the US 'Safe Harbor" accreditation system. This system, in theory, makes it legal for EU and UK companies to transfer data to the US by just checking that the US recipient is on the "Safe Harbor" list maintained by the Federal gtrade Commission (FTC).

Orange exposes customer email addresses

Yet again a company has made the mistake of using a standard email client and exposed the email addresses of thousands of customers by putting them in the Cc:, rather than the Bcc: field. This time it was Orange who compromised the privacy of 1,107 of its customers when a marketing email from its customer relations division revealed the e-mail addresses of, according to one blogger, over 2000 individual email addreses.

Consumers still unclear about online privacy says new survey

New research from the Internet Advertising Bureau, the UK industry body for digital marketing, and business law firm Olswang confirms that consumers need more information and education about online privacy and online behavioral advertising (OBA).
